Tasting at VGS Chateau Potelle

VGS Chateau Potelle

Chateau Potelle was born when Jean-Noel & Marketta Fourmeaux moved from France in 1980, to be part of the California winemaking adventure. They wanted to be creative in making wine rather than being constrained by the years of traditions that existed in France.

When you make a reservation with your LBE, you’ll be promised a St. Helena food and wine experience that is innovative, intimate, and convivial. Enjoy VGS’s unique food and wine pairings, with food bites from the Michelin-starred Chef Ken Frank of the famed La Toque Restaurant expertly complemented by four Chateau Potelle wines.

At the beginning, they found California wines to be too ripe and rich, very bold, and way too oaky. Soon Jean-Noel realized that a culinary revolution was taking place! The food that was being created by the young American chefs was more delicate and refined – the ingredients were respected and celebrated. The marriage of quality and simplicity eliminated the need for the “gravy” cover up. In food and in wine, less is more. Finally they were on the same page!

Their vision at Chateau Potelle is to produce wines with style and character that are representative of their birth place. They’ve built a solid reputation for an avant-garde approach and for its commitment to quality. Come to a place that reflects the style of their wines; elegant, restrained and extremely well done in all details. A place in which Jean-Noel’s attitude resonates throughout; fun, easy and sometimes irreverent but never pretentious.

When asked about his winemaking philosophy, Jean-Noel has said, “Good wine is great, but our mood heavily influences the experience of wine. That is why my mission is to help Americans loosen up and listen to their mood. I want people to inspect their mood because that is a key factor to enjoying life. If you listen to your mood it will lead you to where you want to drink. Wine is for everyone. The more you experiment, the more you understand your mood and ultimately your palate. That is what matters most.”

This elegant and picturesque stand alone tasting room is located at the corner of Dowdell Lane and Highway 29, just south of St. Helena and opened in April 2013 (look for the French and American flags in front). Their elegantly laid-back winery greets you with a sit down tasting with a touch of whimsy.
